Many business leaders face difficulty managing their own business. Therefore, they consult a business coach for the smooth functioning of the organization. A business coach not only helps improve your leadership and self-confidence but can also guide you on the right strategies to grow your business. There may be several business coaches in your network, but certain qualities make others stand out amongst the rest.

If you are hiring a business coach, look for the following qualities:

  1. Experience- While interviewing a business coach, you must look for their experience. Enquire about their accomplishments as a business coach and verify their claims. They should be a part of other businesses’ journeys and have real-life experiences about success and failure. Their vision and understanding will help you avoid mistakes and lead a path towards success.
  2. Good attitude- With plenty of experience, the best business coaches emerge with wisdom and a positive attitude. It contributes to the growth of the organization as they know how to react to a specific situation. They do not panic easily and remain calm and determined even during failures. They understand that the positive and negative aspects are a part of the business journey.
  3. Willing to share- If your business coach holds back from sharing their experiences, they are of little or no value to you and your business. As part of your initial contract, be clear on what deliverables you can expect from the engagement and your expectations from the working relationship.
  4. Expertise- If your business coach offers a long list of services, be cautious. An ideal business coach must be a specialist, not a generalist, and have relevant expertise in your field. You can ask if they have been quoted by any reputed journalist or analyst or invited to speak at events. These are indicators of a specialist.
  5. Accessibility- Your coach, must be easily accessible. When working in a 1:1 coaching engagement, look for a coach that understands that one size does not fit all and is willing to formulate a program specifically for you. Ask them how much time they will offer you. Inquire about their schedule and availability. You should also ask about the number of clients and commitments they have.
  6. Networks- Your business coach’s network and connections play an essential role. Most reputable coaches will have a widespread network of contacts and are willing to make connections for your benefit. You can check their social media profiles to find out who is in their network or ask them.
  7. Expectations- Discuss the expectations of both parties in the coaching engagement upfront. This will help you be accountable and understand your role in the coaching agreement. Don’t expect the coach to perform on your behalf unless you are in a fully done-for-you arrangement.  Your coach can help you create your strategy and plans and make recommendations for your success, but you alone are responsible for taking appropriate action to achieve the results you want.
  8. A true teacher- Your business coach is there to challenge you to discover yourself, rather than just providing the answers to your doubts and queries. It will help develop your skills and benefit you in the long run.
